3rd Santorini Biennale 2016
The 3rd Santorini Biennale will take place in September/October 2016 on the intriguingly beautiful Aegean island. The initiative was inspired, planned and implemented by artist, designer and economist Kikos Papadopoulos, and wholeheartedly supported by local, domestic and foreign organizations, airlines, publishing houses, and hotels. Let’s not forget that the art scene is particularly vibrant on the island of Santorini, with many internationally acclaimed fine art galleries, showcasing original works of local and foreign artists, as well as reproductions of famous pieces, in addition to numerous exhibitions -of photography, sculpture, painting, and digital arts- taking place every year in galleries, museums and even hotels.
The mission of the Santorini Biennale is to promote new, as well as prominent artists that work in various different art forms, crossing the boundaries of traditional concepts, such as classicism, modernism, etc. Inspiration comes from the many different ways ideas can be created, explored, developed and spread in an increasingly interconnected global social system. This is exactly why the Santorini Biennale is always seeking to promote research and experimentation, and also cultivate an environment suitable for continuous communication.
The initiative’s founder and associates wish to support and promote this cultural collaboration on a domestic and international level, aiming to nurture the exchange of artistic and cultural experiences. Upon establishing the power of cooperation across all borders, as well as inspiring and rewarding excellence, the Santorini Biennale wishes to create a broad framework of activities, giving participating artists the chance to interact. The ultimate goal is to motivate societies to effectively handle many of today’s fundamental issues through art.
This year’s Biennale is entitled “Alice’s adventures in Wonderland. Who is Alice, where is wonderland and what is the Wonder?”, with Alice living in a world where things are no longer what they used to be, and morality being derided. So, what does Alice do? Is Alice an individual that lives with no strings attached, and able to shape her personality and environment? As Kikos Papadopoulos says, a more in-depth artistic study of our lifestyle, tradition and way of thinking can lead to new ways of living and to different perceptions and rational. Art and culture unite, in an attempt to reassess the past, comprehend the present and imagine the future, through a multi-disciplinary exhibition that contains and communicates a wealth of cultural messages that may shape what’s in store for us.
The curators of the 3rd Santorini Biennale are Kikos Papadopoulos, as Artistic Director, Christos Papageorgiou, as Art Curator and Local Coordinator, Reiner Schneeberger, as IMMERSIVIA Digital Art Curator, and Gregory Frangos, as Art Curator.
